NEW HAVEN URGES RESIDENTS TO PREPARE FOR THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF HURRICANE EARL

(9/2/2010) NEW HAVEN- On Friday evening, Hurricane Earl is forecasted to travel through the region approximately 150 miles southeast of Long Island. Earl is expected to have its biggest impact across eastern Long Island Friday evening while also having an impact on adjacent waters and southeastern Connecticut. Heavy rains, gusting winds and flooding are possible with this storm for all of Southern New Haven County. According to The National Weather Service, Connecticut has a 40-60% chance of Tropical Storm force winds (39-73 MPH).

The New Haven Office of Emergency Management recommends that now is the time for families to complete any preparations needed to protect themselves and their property during this storm. Residents are asked to implement the following recommendations:

? Make an evacuation plan for you and your family

? Replace batteries in portable radio’s and flashlights

? Shut off all propane tanks

? Secure all yard furniture

? Make sure gutters and down-spouts are clean of debris

? During the storm stay inside your home, away from windows and doors

? Closely monitor local news channels for official storm information

? Pay close attention to the possibility of changing weather forecasts

The Office of Emergency Management will utilize the City’s Everbridge Mass Notification System to relay any important messages or information to residents, businesses and other who have opted into the system.

Residents are reminded of the importance of taking any evacuation orders seriously and leaving designated areas if asked to by emergency officials.
